Historic family tavern serving American country cooking, local seafood, and house-made pies since 1894.
Duarte's Tavern has been serving American country cooking with a Portuguese influence since Frank Duarte established it as a saloon and barbershop in 1894. Now run by the fourth generation of the Duarte family, the restaurant is known for its Cream of Artichoke soup, Crab Cioppino, and house-made pies, a tradition started by Emma Duarte in the 1930s. The menu follows the week's catch for its fish dishes, and nearly all vegetables and fruits come from the restaurant's own garden or nearby growers. Duarte's received a James Beard Award for American Classic Restaurant in 2003. The bar holds an off-sale license and features wines from the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Duarte's Tavern maintains a vegetable garden directly behind the restaurant, tended by three full-time gardeners. The garden produces artichokes, onions, leeks, multiple varieties of beans and peas, lettuce, squash, chard, fennel, herbs, olallieberries, and strawberries, including pole bean and rhubarb varieties brought from the Azores by the founding Duarte family. When garden supply falls short, the restaurant sources from two other local family growers. Fish on the menu reflects the week's local catch. The restaurant pours wines from the Santa Cruz Mountains.
