Small family farm raising pastured beef, pork, lamb, poultry, and eggs in Northern Illinois.
Root & Sky Farm is a small family farm established in 2017 on roughly 60 acres of pasture and forest in Northern Illinois. The farm raises beef cattle, pigs, Katahdin sheep, laying chickens, meat chickens, and turkeys, and maintains a developing orchard. Its stated mission is the renewal and restoration of its land, which was historically hunted by the Potawatomi and farmed by 19th-century beekeeper C. C. Miller. Customers can purchase meat by farm pickup, twice-monthly home delivery, or in bulk as quarter, half, or whole animals. The farm communicates inventory and pricing through a monthly newsletter, which customers can join by email.
Root & Sky Farm raises its pigs in forest paddocks, rotating them through wooded areas using portable electric fencing. The pigs forage on grasses, tree vegetation, acorns, walnuts, and other mast, and are supplemented with organic hog feed, organic apple cider vinegar, organic diatomaceous earth, and organic kelp. Cattle, meat chickens, and turkeys are rotated through pasture, while the Katahdin sheep move through both pasture and forest. The farm uses the pigs' forest rotation to help clear invasive species and improve the woodland over time.
