Rock River Ranches is a family-owned bison operation founded in 2010 by the four Moore brothers and now run by Rex and Julie Moore and their two sons. The business traces its roots to a sheep and cattle ranching tradition going back four generations to the 1930s, which inspired the company name. Rock River Ranches maintains its own bison herd and partners with other ranchers to supply both Colorado front-range restaurants and direct-to-consumer buyers. Products include ribeye, New York striploin, and tenderloin steaks; chuck and tri-tip roasts; ground bison; and value-added items such as Italian sausage, chorizo, merguez, cheddar jalapeño links, corned brisket, and black pastrami. Rock River Ranches raises its bison naturally on grass without antibiotics or growth promotants for approximately 18 months. Bison selected for meat production are then finished on hay and grain (corn and distiller's grains for protein) in small groups of 25, in large paddocks with extra space for exercise and loose hay always available. The herd, numbering around 125 mother cows, is cared for at locations in Wray, Hudson, and Hartsel, Colorado, as well as Lusk, Wyoming. To keep fresh chilled bison consistently available, animals are harvested in small groups of 10 to 14 every two to four weeks at a Colorado facility. Rock River Ranches also works with other like-minded bison producers to supplement supply.
