Certified organic seed farm and bakehouse growing open-pollinated seeds, chile peppers, garlic, and heritage grains in Southwest Colorado.
Pueblo Seed & Food Co is a family farm and bakehouse operation run by Dan Hobbs and Nanna Meyer. The farm was established in 1996 and has operated in McElmo Canyon near Cortez since 2021, growing certified organic crops on 30 irrigated acres. It produces open-pollinated seeds, chile peppers, varietal garlic, mixed vegetables, legumes, and heritage grains, sold as seeds, fresh produce, and value-added products. The Seed & Bakehouse in downtown Cortez offers coffee, sourdough breads and pastries, cookies, cereals, flour, grains, and beans. Pueblo Seed also grows seed crops for national seed companies including High Mowing Organic Seeds, Territorial Seed Company, Botanical Interests, and Fedco Seeds, among others. Pueblo Seed & Food has been certified organic since 2001. The farm grows 100% open-pollinated, non-GMO varieties and selects for drought tolerance. Its farming systems draw on principles from rotational, conservation, regenerative, and biodynamic agricultural traditions. Seed crops are grown in McElmo Canyon specifically for its isolation from pollen drift, helping to keep varieties genetically pure. The farm also partners with other farms in southern Colorado to manage seed isolation distances and supplement its seed offerings. A conservation and stewardship focus guides the seed work: the farm works to preserve varieties handed down by farmers over generations and tells the stories of seeds and food through its products and educational offerings.
