Grass-fed Dorper lamb, whole and half lambs, and registered Dorper breeding stock from a 40-acre Colorado ranch.
Crooked Sky Ranch is a working sheep ranch established in 2021 on 40-plus acres at the foot of Mesa Verde National Park. It raises registered full-blood and purebred Dorper sheep, a South African meat breed selected for fast growth, heavy muscling, and a mild flavor profile. The ranch sells processed whole and half lambs, slaughter lambs, and registered breeding stock to buyers in Colorado and the Four Corners region. Chickens on the property supply fresh eggs. Crooked Sky Ranch is a Colorado Proud participant and is owned and operated by Lisa and Billy Akers. Learn more on their About Page.
Crooked Sky Ranch raises its Dorper flock on open pasture and grass hay, with pasture fields rotated to support grass growth and help manage parasites. No chemicals, hormones, or antibiotics are fed to the sheep. Deworming is performed only on an as-needed basis using the FAMACHA system. Nursing ewes and replacement stock receive alfalfa/grass hay supplementation, and lambs are creep-fed on local grain before transitioning to pasture and hay after weaning. All sheep have free-choice mineral mix. Pregnant ewes are moved to a dedicated pasture near the barn for close monitoring, then into individual lambing jugs for three to four days to ensure maternal bonding. The ranch laminates three times per year, in March, July, and November, producing lambs year-round.
