Overview

Educational farm and farmer training program growing seasonal vegetables and grass-fed beef at 7,600 feet.

The Old Fort at Hesperus is a working educational farm on a 6,300-acre property owned by the Colorado State Land Board and managed by Fort Lewis College. Operating at 7,600 feet elevation, it specializes in diversified vegetables, including greens, herbs, roots, and peppers, alongside a grass-fed beef cattle operation. The farm runs several farmer training programs: a Farmers-in-Training program, an Incubator Program for beginning farm businesses, a Ranching Apprenticeship, and formal Farming Courses. Produce reaches the public through a seasonal CSA with multiple share tiers, a Farm Stand on the Fort Lewis College campus, and an on-site Country Store. The farm also incorporates Indigenous agricultural knowledge and practices, including a Three Sisters plot developed in partnership with Indigenous agricultural experts.
