Educational farm offering a CSA, garden produce, farm visits, and summer camp for kids on restored prairie and wetland acreage.
Prairie Winds Nature Farm is a working educational farm that uses permaculture methods to produce food for people and wildlife. Its 85 acres include restored wetland, prairie, woods, and fenced pastures, along with farm animals and garden spaces. The farm offers a CSA, garden produce sales, scheduled farm visits, group field trips, and a summer camp program for kids. Internships are also available for those looking to learn farming firsthand. A historic mid-1800s barn, relocated to its current spot in 2005, anchors the property and serves the farm's animals and visitors. Learn more on their About Page.
Prairie Winds Nature Farm applies permaculture methods across its operation. Beginning in 1994, the farm restored approximately 60 acres of native prairie and wetland from land previously in a corn and soybean rotation, working with guidance from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Soil and Water Conservation Service. Ongoing stewardship includes periodic spring burning and hand removal of non-native perennials to support native plant competition. The farm holds a National Wildlife Federation certification through the Michiana NWF program.
