Pasture-raised beef and heritage pork from a coastal California ranch
Pomponio Ranch is a working farm nestled at the headwaters of Pomponio Creek between San Gregorio and Pescadero, with a ranching history stretching back to the 1880s. The ranch was purchased in 2010 by a local family who prioritized restoring grasslands that had been severely over-grazed. Today it raises pasture-raised beef and heritage pork, selling cuts directly to customers. Heritage pork breeds include Duroc, Berkshire, and Old Spot, crossed to produce well-marbled meat. Beyond beef and pork, the ranch offers Angus beef jerky, beef sticks, bone broth, beef tallow, tallow soaps, and dog treats. Specialty meat boxes, including a monthly Ranch Reserve Box, are also available. Learn more on their About Page.
Pomponio Ranch manages its cattle using holistic grazing, a method developed by Alan Savory. Cattle are grouped in 17-acre electric-fenced paddocks and moved to a fresh paddock after one day of grazing, allowing each paddock roughly 100 days of rest before the herd returns. This rotation is designed to restore soil health, support perennial grass diversity, and retain soil moisture. During the off-season, cattle and pigs are supplemented with grass hay grown on the ranch and from neighboring farms. Animals also receive hydroponic barley fodder, sprouted on-site in about six days, and spent malted barley mash sourced from local microbreweries. Pomponio Ranch states it does not use growth hormones and does not use antibiotics for disease prevention. Animals are kept on green pastures, and the ranch describes its approach as regenerative agriculture.
