Family-owned farmstead creamery and vineyard producing estate goat and sheep milk cheese and wine.
Pennyroyal Farm is a family-owned farm, dairy, and vineyard where all wines and cheeses are produced entirely from what the farm grows and tends. Named after the wild mint found in its vineyards and pastures, the farm has kept sheep for over a quarter of a century and began making cheese and wine in 2006. Its creamery produces handmade goat and sheep milk cheeses in small quantities, while its estate kitchen turns garden harvests and farmstead meats and cheeses into seasonal plates, a SmorgasBoard, a limited lunch menu, and grab-and-go items. Visitors can book guided farm tours of the creamery, vineyard, and solar-powered barn, concluding with a cheese tasting and wine flight. Pennyroyal Farm is designed to minimize fossil fuel use and maximize the symbiotic relationships of diversified crops and animal husbandry, including solar panels on the barn to supply the farm's electricity. Its vegetable garden follows a no-till farming model focused on maintaining ground cover with harvestable crops and minimal soil disruption. Farmstead compost is integrated as part of the soil amendment program as the farm works toward closed-loop systems. Every goat has a name, and fresh milk is turned into cheese within hours of milking. The creamery features aging rooms maintained at constant temperature and humidity. Seasonal cheeses include blends of goat and sheep milk in the early part of the year and exclusively goat milk later in the year, with some shipments including raw, aged varieties. Pennyroyal's cheesemaker has crafted cheese in both France and California.
