America's first certified organic and Biodynamic winery, producing no-sulfites-added wines since 1980.
Frey Vineyards was founded in 1980 as the first certified organic winery in the United States. The family-run operation produces a range of red, white, Biodynamic, and orange wines, all made without added sulfites, synthetic preservatives, colorants, or animal byproducts. Frey was also the first U.S. winery to earn Demeter Biodynamic certification, achieving that milestone in 1996, and received its USDA Organic certification in 2003. The winery offers a walk-in tasting room, a wine club with member discounts and early access to new releases, and hosts regular public events including live music and seasonal gatherings. Frey Vineyards was named California Organic Winery of the Year at the 2025 New York International Wine Competition.
All Frey wines carry the USDA Organic seal and are made exclusively from organic grapes and organic yeasts. The winery holds Demeter Biodynamic certification, and its estate Biodynamic wines are fermented with wild yeasts found on the grapes themselves. No sulfites are added at any stage, and no animal byproducts are used, making all wines vegan. Frey Vineyards is certified Non-GMO and was a driving force behind Mendocino County becoming the first jurisdiction in the U.S. to ban cultivation of genetically modified organisms. Its holistic farming practices aim to sequester carbon, build healthy soil, and reduce CO2 emissions. Nearly 1,000 acres of wildlife corridors surrounding and running through the vineyards are maintained as a nature reserve, preserving native habitat. Frey Organic and Biodynamic wines have been third-party tested and returned no detectable glyphosates. The winery is in the process of becoming a CFF (Certified Free From) facility.
