One of the oldest and largest pasture-raised cattle ranches in the United States, rooted in Hawaii's Paniolo tradition since 1847.
Parker Ranch was founded in 1847 by John Palmer Parker and his wife Kipikane, granddaughter of King Kamehameha the Great, and has grown into one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States. The ranch spans over 135,000 acres of volcanic grassland on Hawaii Island, raising mainly Black Angus cattle with Simental and Charolais genetics. It is a scaled grass-fed beef producer and the sixth largest calf producer in the United States. Parker Ranch is owned by the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust, whose beneficiaries are four Hawaii nonprofits: Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Parker School, Queen's North Hawaii Community Hospital, and Hawaii Community Foundation. The ranch also breeds and auctions Quarter Horses and hosts its Labor Day Horse Auction. Its operations honor the Paniolo, the Hawaiian cowboy tradition carried since its founding. Parker Ranch's cattle operations are entirely pasture-based, grazing mainly on kikuyu, pangola, and buffelgrass suited to Hawaii Island's climate. The ranch describes its beef as locally raised, naturally pasture-finished, and grass-fed. It develops its own breeding stock and bull battery, selecting Black Angus cattle with Simental and Charolais genetics adapted to North Hawaii. It has held a lifetime AQHA membership since the early 1960s and was named a 50-year Cumulative Breeder in 2021. Reforestation on Mauna Kea focuses on native Mamane trees critical to the endangered Palila bird, in partnership with the Kohala Watershed Partnership and Mauna Kea Watershed Alliance. Through subsidiary Paniolo Power Company, it is developing a 30MW utility-scale solar project for about 15,000 households on Hawaii Island. It is also testing a Symbrosia seaweed-based feed additive that may reduce cattle methane emissions.
