A Hawaii working cattle and sheep ranch raising beef and lamb on Kohala Mountain since 1928.
Kahua Ranch is a working cattle and sheep ranch incorporated in 1928 and situated on 2,100 acres of Kohala Mountain on the Big Island. The ranch raises beef cattle and sheep for meat, with grass-finished beef and lamb available at a Waimea butcher shop and burgers served at Village Burger in Kamuela. Kahua lamb is also featured at Merriman's restaurant in Waimea. Beyond food production, the ranch hosts a Paniolo BBQ dinner, horseback rides, weddings, and corporate events. Its Wagyu herd is raised and finished for an exclusive clientele of customers.
Kahua Ranch raises cattle naturally on open pastures without added hormones, across six precipitation zones ranging from rainforest at 3,500 feet to the ocean. The cattle herd, originally Hereford-based, is now primarily Angus-influenced with Charolais as a terminal sire crossbreed, with more than 40 years of artificial insemination used to guide the genetic direction of the herd. The ranch also maintains a certified purebred Wagyu herd. Its sheep flock is Merino-based, originating in Niihau, with Romney, Corriedale, Dorset, and Coopers influence, and the sheep graze alongside cattle to help manage the land. Kahua was among the first adopters of high-density, rapid rotational grazing, a method designed to improve soil protection, water infiltration, species diversity, and overall ecosystem resilience.
