Third-generation family farm producing estate-grown extra virgin olive oils, infused oils, and balsamic vinegars.
Ojai Olive Oil is a third-generation family farm on the Asquith Ranch, producing estate-grown extra virgin olive oil from groves that date back over 150 years. The farm grows multiple European varietals, including Lechin de Sevilla, Columella, Leccino, Frantoio, Pendolino, Maurino, and Nocellara del Belice, many propagated from centuries-old trees in Tuscany, Provence, and Sicily. Its product line includes four extra virgin olive oil blends, herb- and citrus-infused oils, balsamic vinegars, olive oil cosmetics, and gift sets. Ojai Olive Oil has earned more than 50 Gold Medal and Best in Show awards, including over a dozen wins at the New York International Olive Oil Competition. Owner and manager Philip Asquith holds a Master Miller designation from the California Olive Oil Council. The farm operates an on-site tasting room and welcomes visitors. Ojai Olive Oil has farmed organically since its founding, using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides of any kind. Olives are picked by hand and carried directly to the on-site mill, keeping the time from tree to press to an absolute minimum. The farm uses a classic Tuscan-style mill: olives pass through a hopper, crusher, and mixers before a decanter centrifuge separates the oil. Finished oil is stored in stainless steel tanks in a dark, oxygen-free, temperature-controlled environment and bottled continuously from the barrel. Olive paste left after milling is composted with additional organic matter for nearly a year, then used to brew compost teas that form the basis of the farm's fertilization program. The farm operates on permaculture principles, using waste outputs as feeds, fuels, and fertilizers, and focusing on building a self-sustaining ecosystem. Water management, including soil care and rainwater catchment, is an ongoing focus to reduce irrigation needs.
