Ocean Beach People's Food Co-op

Ocean Beach People's Food Co-op is a community-owned cooperative grocery store founded in 1971 by local activists seeking a consumer-owned alternative to conventional grocery stores. It began as a workers' collective and became a community-owned cooperative in 1985. More than 13,000 members and their households own the store. The store is entirely vegetarian and carries certified organic produce, bulk foods and herbs, wellness supplements, body care, grocery, and perishables. Its upstairs vegan Deli and Bakery offers entrees, salads, sandwiches, soups, juices, and fresh baked goods. Owners receive benefits including rotating discounts, quarterly store-wide sales days, and access to a FLOWER program offering reduced membership fees for low-income shoppers and college students.
