Four-season coastal market farm growing vegetables, strawberries, and cut flowers on the Mendocino Coast.
Nye Ranch is a diverse, four-season market farm run by Shea Burns and his mother on a six-acre property along Highway 1, situated 1,200 feet from the Pacific Ocean. The farm cultivates three-quarters of an acre of vegetables, strawberries, and cut flowers, taking advantage of the maritime climate, coastal fog, and sandy soil. Produce includes broccoli, cauliflower, kale, lettuce, beets, carrots, tomatoes, garlic, summer squash, and strawberries, among others, with seasonal cut flowers ranging from sweet peas and ranunculus to dahlias and chrysanthemums. Nye Ranch sells directly at its on-site farm stand, at the Fort Bragg Certified Farmers Market, and wholesale to local restaurants, with roughly 90% of its produce sold within 12 miles of the farm. The property is home to a historic 120-plus-year-old barn that once served as a seaside dairy. Learn more on their About Page.
Nye Ranch grows in permanent raised beds using a low-till approach that disturbs only the top one-and-a-half inches of soil. All vegetables are grown using organic amendments, certified organic compost, and compost teas brewed on-site with locally sourced kelp from Rising Tide Sea Vegetables. Cover crops are rotated throughout the growing cycle to balance soil health and sequester carbon. Cut flowers are grown without chemical inputs. The farm is Mendocino Renegade Certified. Funded by a USDA NRCS grant, Nye Ranch has planted pollinator hedgerows throughout the property using native plants and herbs to support beneficial insects and wildlife habitat.
