Massa Organics is a family-owned farm run by ecologists Greg Massa and Raquel Krach, growing certified organic almonds and medium-grain brown rice in the fertile Sacramento Valley. The farm started as a small organic rice operation in 2002 and has since expanded its crops and deepened its commitment to soil health. Products sold directly from the farm include raw almonds, roasted almonds, almond butter, brown rice, satsuma mandarin oranges, and gift boxes. Massa Organics harvests at peak ripeness and processes rice in small batches to preserve flavor. Massa Organics grows all its foods using certified organic, regenerative farming practices. Core soil-building methods include limited tillage (no-till planting), cover crops, compost application, and sheep grazing in the orchard to control weeds without fossil-fuel-powered equipment. The farm runs four tractors and a rice combine on biodiesel made from waste vegetable oil, with emissions 74% lower than petroleum diesel. All farm electricity comes from a 64 kW on-farm solar system, and the rice mill is 100% solar powered. Irrigation water from rice fields is recycled through a holding pond using a solar-powered pump. The farm has received grants from California's Healthy Soils Initiative and the California Air Resources Board to support regenerative and lower-emissions farming.
