Overview

Taro farm and cultural learning center restoring ancient loʻi kalo in Waiʻanae Valley

Kaʻala Farm, also known as the Kaʻala Farm and Cultural Learning Center, traces its roots to the early 1970s, when young people from the Waiʻanae community discovered and began restoring ancient loʻi kalo (taro terraces) in the uplands of Waiʻanae Valley. Under the leadership of Uncle Eric Enos, the effort grew from a grassroots restoration project into a center for Hawaiian land-based learning. The farm sits in the valley beneath Mauna Kaʻala, Oʻahu's highest peak, on 97 acres of stewarded public land. It has restored 40 loʻi kalo and hosts about 3,000 students and visitors yearly. Programs include open Community Work Days, school group visits, and custom farm days for organizations. All kalo and produce grown here is shared back with the community, with first priority to Waiʻanae food banks and kūpuna (elder) caregiving efforts. Learn more on their About Page.
