Family-owned watercress farm growing spring-fed watercress since 1928.
Sumida Farm is a family-owned watercress farm that has been growing and selling watercress since 1928, when founders Makiyo and Moriichi Sumida began cultivating five acres of land fed by Kalauao Springs. The farm leases its land from Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate and sits atop a natural underground aquifer whose spring water flows throughout the growing beds. In 1928, watercress was among the only locally grown green vegetables in Hawaii, and Sumida Farm remains one of the state's enduring local agriculture operations. The farm also has a long history of hosting school field trips, giving keiki a first-hand look at a working farm and the people who grow their food.
Sumida Farm grows its watercress in the pure spring water of Kalauao Springs, which a University of Hawaii study confirmed remains clean enough to drink from the source. Hawaii law has long required watercress sold commercially to be grown in pure spring water, free from animal waste contamination, a standard the farm's water source meets. For pest control, the farm uses an aerial sprinkler system, a method developed on-site in the late 1970s by farm agronomist John McHugh, who found it provides a natural deterrent to the Diamondback moth's reproduction cycle. This technique is still the primary form of pest management used on the farm.
