Neighborhood butcher shop offering fresh cuts, housemade sausages, and European-style charcuterie from Midwestern family farms.
Homestead Meats is a full-service butcher shop founded in Evanston in 2014 by Ehran Ostrreicher, who studied whole-animal butchery and charcuterie before opening the shop. It offers fresh beef, pork, lamb, and poultry cut to order, alongside a rotating selection of housemade sausages, European-style charcuterie, pâtés, terrines, and cured meats. The shop also carries farm-fresh eggs, cheeses, dairy, stocks, broths, cooking fats, and a small line of prepared foods. Products are made in-house in small batches, and the selection changes with each week's production. Chicago Magazine named Homestead Meats its Best Butcher Shop in 2018. Homestead Meats sources from family-owned farms in Illinois and Wisconsin, including Kilgus Farmstead, Slagel Family Farm, Gunthorp Farms, and Pinn-Oak Farms. Its farm partners raise livestock on pasture without commercial feed, hormones, or GMOs. Ostrreicher has visited the partner farms personally to observe their methods first-hand. The shop also works with smaller farms and local producers for limited or seasonal offerings, focusing on farmers who share its commitment to responsible animal husbandry. Sausages, charcuterie, and cured meats are produced in-house using traditional techniques drawn from European and other international traditions, with all-natural ingredients.
