Horse-powered CSA vegetable farm growing over 100 varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers.
Hillside Springs Farm is a small CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, tending three acres of gardens alongside pastures, hayfields, an orchard, greenhouses, and small wetland areas. Farmers Frank Hunter and Kim Peavey own, live, and work on the property. The farm offers Full Shares (weekly pick-up) and Half Shares (pick-up every other week) from early June through late November, with a Keene drop-off site also available. Members customize their shares through free-choice items, you-pick opportunities, and a surplus and sharing tray at the harvest shed. CSA shares are also accessible through a Scholarship Fund, EBT-SNAP, and the Granite State Market Match program. The farm grows over 100 varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers, including many heirloom varieties. Learn more on their About Page.
Hillside Springs Farm is entirely horse- and hand-powered, with Belgian and Belgian/Percheron cross draft horses doing the plowing, discing, harrowing, bed-making, and cultivation. No chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides are used on the fields or the food. Every year, the farm applies cover crops and ten to twenty tons of farm-made compost per acre. Certified biodynamic and organic sprays are used when necessary for bugs or blights. The farm follows biodynamic and organic farming practices, sourcing biodynamic compost and field preparations from a local biodynamic farm. It grows many heirloom vegetable varieties, including some bred for New Hampshire conditions, trials new varieties each season, and saves seed. Hillside Springs Farm is a member of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Hampshire, the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association, and the Seed Savers Exchange.
