San Francisco seafood restaurant open since 1979, serving fresh fish with a rotating menu tied to local farms and fisheries.
Hayes Street Grill is a seafood restaurant in San Francisco's Performing Arts district, located across from Davies Symphony Hall and one block from the Opera House and SFJazz. Founded in 1979 by Patricia Unterman and partners, it was built on the model of classic San Francisco grills, with a commitment to fresh, never-frozen fish and as many local ingredients as possible. The menu changes to reflect what is available. Performing artists and artistic directors regard the restaurant as their club, and autographed photos of ballet, opera, and symphony artists line the walls. Private dining is available in two rooms: the Bar Room, which seats up to 35 guests, and the original main dining room, which seats up to 75. Learn more on their About Page.
Hayes Street Grill is certified by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program and uses only fresh, not frozen, fish. Produce comes directly from local farms including Mariquita, WHOA Farm, Everything Under the Sun, Brokaw, Hamada, Yerena, Chue's, McGinnis, Alfieri, Bella Viva, Heirloom Organics, and Martin Bournhonesque, as well as other growers at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Co-owner Patricia Unterman is a founding board member of that market. Meats, poultry, and dairy are sourced from small producers the restaurant knows directly.
