San Francisco restaurant serving seasonal French and Italian-inspired menus from a wood-fired brick oven since 1979.
Zuni Café opened on February 15, 1979, and has grown from a single narrow storefront into a landmark San Francisco restaurant occupying a triangular 1913 building on Market Street. Chef and owner Gilbert Pilgram leads the kitchen, continuing the vision established by longtime chef-owner Judy Rodgers. Menus change regularly and draw on seasonal organic ingredients, with French and Italian cuisines as the primary influences. The restaurant is best known for dishes prepared in its wood-fired brick oven, including roast chicken, whole fish, and vegetable gratins. Zuni Café won the James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Restaurant in 2003 and Outstanding Service in 2018. Reservations are available for lunch, brunch, and dinner, with an oyster and shellfish menu served throughout the day.
Zuni Café's menus are inspired by seasonal organic ingredients and draw on traditional French and Italian cooking. Nearly all of the produce, meat, and fish served is farmed or harvested in what the restaurant describes as a sustainable manner. The wood-fired brick oven is central to the kitchen, used for roasting chicken, whole fish, braised meats, vegetable gratins, and savory tarts. Gilbert Pilgram's culinary background includes years as chef, partner, and general manager at Chez Panisse, and the restaurant continues to uphold a philosophy of honest, local, and seasonal food.
