Happy Hens is a family-owned egg farm in Ramona, California, founded in 2012 by Luie and Chloe Nevarez. The farm produces organic, pasture-raised eggs under a standard they call "Truly Outdoors" or "Beyond Pasture Raised," which exceeds conventional pasture-raised requirements. Eggs are available for purchase at the on-farm store, at grocery retailers across San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles County, and via online ordering for farm-store pickup. Beyond eggs, the farm welcomes visitors for guided farm tours, a petting zoo, a playground, and overnight farm stays. Happy Hens is ranked in the top three egg farms in the United States on the Cornucopia Institute Organic Egg Scorecard, with a perfect 5-out-of-5 rating, and is one of six farms nationally to hold Whole Foods Market's highest egg rating. Happy Hens raises its hens outdoors year-round, giving them acres of pasture to roam from sunrise to sunset. The farm uses small mobile coops that are moved twice a week to fresh fields, allowing continuous rotational grazing. As the hens move between pastures, they naturally fertilize and till the soil and help control weeds and insects without chemical pesticides or fertilizers. Hens forage on organic pasture and are supplemented with non-GMO, organic, glyphosate-free grains and alfalfa. The farm never feeds its hens corn or soy, and never trims beaks. Roosters are kept as part of each flock to maintain social order and help protect the hens. Livestock guardian dogs provide additional predator protection. The farm holds USDA Organic certification, Non-GMO Project Verification, and Real Organic Project certification. Eggs are hand-gathered, hand-washed, hand-inspected, and hand-packed on the farm.
