Black Mountain Farm is a small diversified farm in Ramona run by farmer Michelle, an engineer by training who began by homesteading with a backyard garden before establishing the farm. It raises pasture-raised meat chickens and laying hens, and grows seasonal vegetables. Products are available through a self-serve farmstand on the property, online ordering with pickup or delivery options, a Foodshed Farm Hub location in San Diego, and appearances at the Fallbrook and Point Loma farmers markets. Black Mountain Farm describes its approach as regenerative, growing food without synthetic chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics, or other pharmaceuticals. On-farm food production is treated as an ecosystem: microbes build soil nutrients, plants produce biomass from those nutrients, and animals cycle nutrients back into the soil. Laying hens live in mobile schooners moved weekly to give them fresh ground to graze; meat birds live in mobile tractors moved daily once they are large enough, with access to open foraging. All birds live outside, except as chicks. The farm uses pack llamas and geese as natural predator deterrents for the pastured flocks. Hens are fed non-GMO feed. The farm also incorporates a compost system that the chickens actively contribute to and benefit from.
