Regenerative urban farm growing produce, fruit, and eggs to feed and employ underserved communities.
GrowGood Urban Farm is a nonprofit employment social enterprise that has operated The Bell Farm at the Salvation Army's Bell Shelter since 2011. The 1.5-acre regenerative farm features an orchard of 35 fruit trees growing nectarines, apples, apricots, pomegranates, peaches, moringa, bananas, and more. The farm also includes multiple raised-bed garden areas, a half-acre of in-ground row crops growing a rotation of seasonal produce, a commercial greenhouse, and a free-range chicken area housing up to 40 hens. Harvested produce is donated to the Bell Shelter and distributed through mobile farm stands to low-income communities. GrowGood also runs a 300-hour paid workforce training program, giving individuals with barriers to employment on-the-job agricultural skills and income.
The Bell Farm is described by GrowGood as a regenerative farm. It maintains a dedicated composting area using aerated, turned windrows to produce organic, natural compost used on-site. The chicken flock is free-range, housed in a coop with an enrichment play area. Crops follow a seasonal rotation across in-ground row crop beds as well as a commercial greenhouse.
