Multi-generation farm growing chemical-free produce, pasture-raised chickens, and eggs in Central Illinois.
Grandma & Grandpa's Farm is a multi-generation family farm in Sparland, Illinois, rooted in a homestead that dates to 1914. Run by Ginger and Tony Malek, the farm grows a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and fruit, and raises pasture-raised whole fryer chickens and eggs. Products are available through a seasonal CSA subscription program offering produce, chicken, and egg shares, as well as at the Peoria Riverfront Farmers Market. The farm's mission is to provide sustainably raised food for its surrounding community while keeping the land and its traditions alive for future generations.
Grandma & Grandpa's Farm grows produce without synthetic fertilizers or chemicals, using cover crops, crop rotation, and natural fertilizers to build soil health. Weeds are managed by hoeing, hand-pulling, and tilling before going to seed. Insects are controlled by hand-picking or natural deterrents such as cedar oil, kaolin clay, hot pepper solutions, and soapy water. The farm practices low- and no-till methods and uses hand tools as often as possible to keep its carbon footprint low, turning to a small tractor only when necessary. Local compost is used to return nutrients to the soil. Pasture-raised fryer chickens are fed only certified organic feed, are never given antibiotics, and have no preservatives added during processing. Their open-air pens are moved regularly so the chickens have access to fresh pasture. Egg-laying hens are free-range, fed certified organic feed, and given garden scraps throughout the day.
