Certified organic vegetable farm offering CSA shares, eggs, and honey since 1979.
George Hall Farm has been in operation since 1966, when George Hall founded it using environmentally safe and organic techniques. In 1979, George was one of the first farmers in Connecticut to become certified organic, a certification the farm continues to hold today. The farm is now run by Daren Hall, George's nephew, along with his wife Janet and their three children. In 2014, the farm was preserved with the Simsbury Land Trust and spans land on Old Farms Rd. and Quarry Rd., with over 50 acres in vegetable production. George Hall Farm offers CSA shares running from June through November and sells at several farmers markets during the season. The farm also produces eggs and honey, and offers an internship program for those interested in learning about farming and organic practices.
George Hall Farm holds certified organic status through Baystate Organic Certifiers of Massachusetts, a certification in place since 1979. The farm grows a range of vegetables across the seasons, including heirloom varieties of crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, and carrots. Hoop houses on the property help extend the growing season and allow for greater climate control over crops. The farm's hens have access to indoor and outdoor areas and eat a diet of the farm's organic vegetables in summer, supplemented with non-GMO grain in winter. Beehives are kept at the edge of the fields; the bees pollinate the farm's crops, and the resulting honey is extracted, spun, filtered, and bottled on the farm. Daren Hall also trains and works with teams of oxen, which can be used to pull plows and cultivators in the field.
