Dancing TreePeople Farm is an 11.7-acre certified organic farm in Upper Lake, California, built around an orchard that has been producing walnuts for over 50 years, organically since 2000. The farm has expanded beyond its walnut orchard to include an organic vegetable garden, a greenhouse, and two experimental permaculture food forests. Natural buildings on the property include a structure made of strawbales, natural plasters, and cob. Dancing TreePeople Farm is also home to Permaculture Potluck, a project offering hands-on education in permaculture, ecotech, and sustainable living. The farm publishes writing on its practices and produces publications focused on inspiring stories related to the land and sustainable life.
Dancing TreePeople Farm models the ethics and principles of permaculture, treating it as an ecological and regenerative design methodology applied across the entire farm system. Its certified organic orchard has been grown organically since 2000. The farm does not till the soil, a practice it connects to building soil health. A 7.85 KW solar energy installation provides 100% of the farm's electrical energy, and the farm also uses solar ovens for cooking. The permaculture framework guiding the farm centers on three ethics: Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share (returning surplus to earth and people). Design principles applied include whole systems thinking, energy cycling, stacking functions, and beneficial connections between farm elements.
