SLO Food Co-op is San Luis Obispo's community-owned grocery store, open to the general public and in operation since 1979. The store carries a wide range of departments: farm-fresh produce, bulk foods, organic and natural meats, dairy (including raw organic options), eggs, cheese, beer, wine, freshly baked bread, vegan products, and dry pantry goods. A made-in-house grab-and-go section offers sandwiches, sides, and meals, with many vegan options. The wellness department stocks vitamins, supplements, personal care products, essential oils, and protein powders. Shoppers can also browse over 300 culinary and medicinal herbs sold in bulk. SLO Food Co-op emphasizes organic, sustainable, and non-GMO products throughout the store. All fruits and vegetables are grown organically (pesticide-free), and most are certified organic; many are also locally sourced from regional farm partners. The bulk department carries whole grains, flours, beans, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, local honey, local olive oil, fresh-ground nut butters, and more, with nearly all being organic. Shoppers are welcome to bring and fill their own clean containers in bulk and herb sections, supporting a low-to-no-waste shopping model. The chill department includes organic and natural meats, pasteurized organic and raw organic dairy, and local on-tap kombucha. The wine section includes organic, biodynamic, and SIP Certified bottles alongside many local Central Coast labels. The store carries a California Green Business Network certification.
