Nonprofit urban farm offering produce, regenerative meats, farm-based education, and a pay-what-you-can farm stand.
City Farm SLO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit urban farm that has stewarded 19 acres of the Calle Joaquin Agricultural Reserve in organic agriculture since 2013. Thirteen acres are subleased to small-scale, independent farmers, while the remaining acreage is farmed by the nonprofit through youth education programs. The farm sells fruits, vegetables, flowers, and its own line of regenerative proteins (roasting chickens, lamb, and beef) through a pay-what-you-can farm stand and an online shop. Education programs include a Youth Empowerment Program for teens, on-site and virtual field trips for K-5 students, a Therapeutic Horticulture program for children and young adults with disabilities, and a College Corps fellowship. Private tours, volunteer opportunities, and tenant farming plots for independent growers round out the farm's offerings. Learn more on their About Page.
City Farm SLO practices and teaches regenerative farming methods, with the stated goal of improving ecosystem health both above and below ground over time. The farm uses reduced tillage: once a growing area is established, the soil is not turned again, which the farm says helps sequester carbon beneath the surface. Compost is produced on-site using three systems: thermophilic compost, vermicompost, and a Johnson-Su Aerobic Digester, supplemented by locally sourced composts. Sheep and chickens are integrated into the farming system to cycle nutrients and fertilize soil naturally. The farm uses Integrated Pest Management, combining biological, cultural, and mechanical strategies, and does not use any synthetic pesticides. The farm is farmed in organic agriculture, as stated on its homepage.
