Field's Farmstead is a small family farm in Cavan, Ontario, run by JP Field and Cheslee. The farm has been operating since the family purchased the land in 2020. It grows a wide range of seasonal vegetables, herbs, and eggs, and also produces herbal teas, herbal skincare products, and handmade crafts. Members can shop a weekly online store, choosing exactly what they want rather than receiving a fixed box. Orders can be picked up directly at the farm or delivered locally to surrounding areas. Field's Farmstead follows permaculture, regenerative, and natural farming practices, with a focus on soil health. The farm uses no pesticides or herbicides of any kind, including those that are organically approved. Soil disturbance is minimized by avoiding tilling; instead, the farm relies on mulching, tarps, and animals to prepare and maintain garden beds. Chickens are rotated around gardens and pastures using electric net fencing, allowing them access to fresh grass and insects throughout the warm season while contributing to soil fertility. The farm grows a diversity of plants, including nitrogen-fixing species, and rotates annual vegetable crops to support soil balance and deter pests. Seeds are sourced primarily from Ontario-based seed companies, supplemented with saved seeds from the farm and from local growers.
