Farmer's Provisions is a second-generation family farm in Indiana, operated by the Howell family, who have been raising livestock, vegetables, and commodities in the state for more than 50 years. The farm raises 100% grass-fed and grass-finished cattle and sells beef direct to consumers. The product line includes steaks, roasts, ground beef, beef brats, short ribs, brisket, beef bacon (uncured and all natural), beef tallow, bones and organs, and snacking options. Cuts are available individually or in bundled boxes, and larger freezer packages ranging from an eighth to a whole beef are offered by deposit. Farmer's Provisions raises cattle on a diverse mix of forages including grasses, legumes, and brassicas, all of which are non-GMO. The herd is never fed grain or grain by-products, and no added hormones are used. Cattle are allocated fresh pasture on a daily rotation, a practice the farm describes as mimicking natural grazing to optimize the animals' nutritional intake and support plant health. The cattle are integrated into a broader cropping system that also includes vegetable and grain production and cover cropping; manure and cover crops build organic biomass in the soil, support soil microorganisms, and reduce dependence on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Beef is processed by a local, family-owned, USDA-inspected butcher rather than one of the major meatpacking conglomerates, and identity is preserved through processing so every pound traces back to the farm. After processing, beef is dry aged for tenderness and flavor, then individually vacuum-sealed.
