Edgewater Farm is a family farm situated along the alluvial plains of the Connecticut River, now owned and managed by the third generation of the Sprague family. The farm first harvested strawberries in 1976 and has grown steadily since, now cropping 95 acres of tillable land. It operates approximately 70,000 square feet of poly greenhouses for ornamental bedding plants and greenhouse vegetables, and grows small fruits across roughly 10 acres of strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Produce is sold directly through the greenhouses, a Route 12A farm stand and kitchen, a CSA program with summer and fall share options, and select Upper Valley retail locations. The farm also offers pick-your-own strawberries and donates to area food shelves through its partnership with local nonprofit Willing Hands.
Edgewater Farm describes its approach as Integrated Pest Management (IPM), drawing from both conventional and organic methods. It is not USDA Certified Organic, and states this plainly on its own pages. When spraying is used, the farm opts for materials that are biologically compatible with natural systems, many of which are certified for use on organic farms. Over the past 20 years it has reduced herbicide use by over 60%, investing in modern cultivation equipment and a no-till grain drill to support cover cropping and long-term soil improvement. The farm has used biodegradable field plastic for over 25 years, eliminating hundreds of yards of fossil-fuel-based plastic from landfill annually. It has also made efficiency investments including LED lighting, electric motor upgrades, and solar panels. Its stated long-term goal is to farm in a way that keeps the land in sustainable production for future generations.
