Family-owned Colorado ranch selling grass-finished freezer beef direct to consumers
B Bar S Ranches is a family-owned and operated beef cattle ranching operation with two Colorado locations. Its high mountain pasture near Nederland has been family-owned since 1965, with a second high plains ranch near Elizabeth added in 1991. The ranch produces naturally raised, grass-finished freezer beef sold directly to consumers. Customers order by the quarter, half, or whole carcass and specify their own cuts, steak thickness, package size, and what to grind. Beef is delivered to the packer in early September and is typically ready for pickup within about ten days of delivery. Arapahoe Meat Co. is used for processing, and beef jerky and a variety of sausages are available upon request at additional cost.
B Bar S Ranches raises cattle on native mountain and prairie pastures, feeding them grass and grass hay, with no grain finishing. Cattle spend 90 days prior to harvest on mountain ground with fresh water, exercise, and open space. No hormonal growth stimulants, appetite enhancers, or antibiotics are added to feed. Any animal that must be treated with antibiotics for health reasons is excluded from the freezer-beef program. The ranch states that its grass-finished beef meets the American Grassfed Association criterion of 95 percent or more of the animal's primary energy source coming from grass, legumes, or forages.
