Six-generation family ranch raising certified organic, grass-fed beef and growing estate wine grapes in San Luis Obispo County.
Avenales Ranch is a sixth-generation family operation that has been ranching in San Luis Obispo County since 1875. The Sinton family farms roughly 18,000 acres along Shell Creek Road outside Shandon, raising Black Angus and Hereford cross cattle and growing estate wine grapes through their Shell Creek Vineyards label. The ranch produces grass-fed and grass-finished beef, available as quarter, half, and whole shares as well as boxed cuts. The vineyard, planted in 1972, is known for Old Vine Petite Sirah and Chenin Blanc, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Valdiguie. Avenales Ranch also holds a conservation easement with the California Rangeland Trust protecting more than 12,000 acres of the property.
Avenales Ranch raises its cattle as 100% grass-fed and grass-finished. The ranch and its cattle are certified organic and carry a GAP 4 humane animal welfare certification. The operation does not use hormones, antibiotics, vaccines, or pesticides in raising its animals. Beef is dry-aged before sale. On the viticulture side, the estate grapes are organically farmed. The ranch credits over 150 years of managed grazing with maintaining the land's native habitat, and a conservation easement with the California Rangeland Trust protects more than 12,000 acres of the property for future generations.
