Spray-free market garden offering seasonal vegetables, eggs, a CSA farm share, and a weekly farm stand.
Alternate Root Farm is a market garden in Valley, Nova Scotia, started in 2022 by Andrew and Carly Phillips. The farm grows seasonal vegetables and herbs and raises laying hens, selling produce and eggs through three channels: a weekly CSA farm share box, an online shop with pick-up or delivery, and an on-farm stand open Fridays from May through October. The CSA runs for 21 weeks and offers two box sizes, with subscribers receiving a rotating selection of whatever is in season each week. Later in the season, boxes may include produce from other organic producers. The farm stand also carries goods from other local producers alongside the farm's own offerings.
Alternate Root Farm grows without chemical herbicides, pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers. In place of synthetic inputs, the farm feeds the soil through high-quality compost, cover cropping, and organic amendments, working to support biological activity in the ground. The farm uses permanent raised beds to protect earthworm and microbial life, and keeps soil covered with mulches and crops as much as possible. Weed management relies on manual cultivation, mulching, flame weeding, stale seedbeds, and minimal tillage. Crop rotation, insect netting, and diversity of crops are used to manage pest and disease pressure without the use of sprays.
