Vera Earl Ranch is a family-owned working cattle ranch that has operated in the Sonoita Valley since 1968. Founded by Burton Beck, it has grown over the decades by acquiring land leases and partnering with neighboring ranches, including the historic Empire and Sands Ranches. The ranch spans terrain from the base of the Santa Rita Mountains west across the valley and over the Whetstones to the San Pedro River in the east. It raises Black Angus and Black Angus cross cows, bred to Black Angus and Charolais bulls selected for adaptability and high-marbling genetics. Under the Vera Earl Premium Beef label, the ranch sells individual cuts, steaks, ground beef, and bulk shares, with beef dry-aged for 21 days and graded High Choice or Prime. Cattle on the Vera Earl Premium Beef program are pasture-raised on open rangeland and finished on a corn-based ration. The ranch holds Global Animal Partnership (G.A.P.) Step 4 Pasture Raised certification, verified by Earth Claims, which requires a vegetarian diet with no animal by-products and prohibits hormones and antibiotics. All program beef also carries Verified Natural Beef (VNB), Non-Hormone Treated Cattle (NHTC), and Age and Source Verification certifications through IMI Global and Where Food Comes From, each requiring annual on-site audits. The ranch is CARE certified across animal care, environmental stewardship, and people and community pillars. Vera Earl Ranch also holds two Beef Quality Assurance certifications, one for its cow-calf operation and one for transportation. Individual animals are tracked from birth using Electronic Identification Devices (EIDs). Cowboys receive ongoing training in humane animal handling and rangeland and riparian area management.
