Overview
Iowa City vegetable farm growing 50+ crops, with CSA shares, farmers' market sales, and a seedling CSA.
Trowel & Error Farm is a two-acre vegetable farm in Iowa City, growing more than 50 different kinds of vegetables with an emphasis on crops that are harder to find locally. Specialty items include watercress, Chinese mustard, arugula, broccoli raab, and radicchio. The farm sells produce through seasonal CSA shares, a seedling CSA, farmers' markets, and direct sales to chefs. Farmer Carly McAndrews started the farm in 2019 after over a decade working on vegetable farms across Vermont, Connecticut, and Iowa, including a Master's degree in Sustainable Agriculture from Iowa State University. The farm operates on two acres leased from Johnson County through the Land Access Program at the Johnson County Historic Poor Farm.
The farm follows a 10-year crop rotation plan and grows approximately 50 crops to reduce disease and pest pressure. Cover crops (including oats and peas in spring, buckwheat in summer, and rye and vetch in fall) are seeded throughout the season to prevent erosion, suppress weeds, and return nutrients to the soil. Compost is added each season to restore soil fertility, and tillage is minimized to protect soil structure. Season extension relies on unheated caterpillar tunnels and quick hoops, enabling harvests from early spring through late fall and into winter using storage crops like rutabaga, celeriac, and radicchio. The farm accepts SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks, and Farmers' Market Nutrition Program benefits, and offers reduced CSA rates and working memberships to keep fresh produce accessible.
