USDA certified Organic and Real Organic fruit and vegetable farm specializing in tomatoes, peppers, greens, and herbs.
Adobe House Farm is a USDA certified Organic and Real Organic fruit and vegetable farm in the Animas Valley, founded in 2010 by Linley and Peter Dixon and Reid Smith. The farm started in the yard of a family friend's adobe house before finding a permanent home in Hermosa, Colorado in 2017. It grows a wide variety of seasonal produce, specializing in tomatoes, peppers, greens, cucumbers, and herbs across more than 40 different crops and varieties. Produce is available at local retailers including James Ranch Market, Natural Grocers, and Durango Natural Foods, as well as through restaurant delivery, a farm-to-school program, and a stand at the Durango Farmers Market on Saturday mornings from mid-May through October. Learn more on their About Page.
Adobe House Farm holds both USDA Organic certification and Real Organic Project certification, the latter requiring that crops be grown in the soil while actively building it. The farm operates two solar-heated tunnels, two unheated hoop houses, and several acres of outdoor annual and perennial growing beds. Drip irrigation draws from ditch water supplied by the Animas River, and electricity is generated on-site by solar panels. Organic matter comes from locally collected sources. The farm practices minimal tillage and applies mulch and compost from locally available inputs such as coffee grounds, leaves, and manure from vegetarian animals fed organic hay. No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers are used. All planting, harvesting, and washing is done by hand.
