Certified organic vegetable and livestock farm in the Animas Valley
Brightwood Farm is a small, 5-acre crop and livestock farm in Hermosa, Colorado, run by Dean and Susan Vidal. The farm grows a broad variety of vegetables year round, as well as perennial berries and fruit. All vegetables are certified organic, and the farm is also approved by the Real Organic Project. Brightwood Farm sells its salad mix, mesclun mix, and other seasonal vegetables at the James Ranch Market, and also offers direct sales from the farm. The Vidals farmed in Virginia for 18 years before relocating to the Animas Valley in 2019. Learn more on their About Page.
Brightwood Farm practices regenerative agriculture, farming both organically and biologically to build soil health over time. The farm tills minimally to support beneficial fungi and bacteria in the soil, which in turn make minerals available to vegetable plants and pasture grasses. High-quality compost is produced on-site from plant material and composted manure to amend soil and feed soil microbes. The farm recycles as many nutrients as possible by composting, growing supplemental feed for animals, and using composted manure as fertilizer. Brightwood Farm has transitioned from Jersey cows to a flock of colored Romeldale sheep, and is establishing polyculture beds that include elderberry plants alongside compatible annual and perennial species.
