Family-run hydroponic farm growing pesticide-free greens, vegetables, and microgreens since 2014.
The Homestead Hydroponic Farm is a family-owned operation established in 2014, nestled next to Myakka State Park just east of Sarasota. It grows lettuces, Swiss chard, root vegetables, tomatoes, cucumbers, microgreens, sprouts, shoots, herbs, and cut flowers using hydroponic methods entirely without synthetic pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, or GMOs. Produce is harvested 24 to 48 hours before purchase. Customers can shop through the farm's online store, pick up at the farm, find the farm at the downtown Sarasota farmers market on Saturdays, or arrange home or commercial delivery. The store also carries products from local vendors the farm has come to know through years at the markets. Founded by Michael and Sarah as a two-person operation, the farm has grown each season with the addition of dedicated farmhands. Learn more on their About Page.
The Homestead Hydroponic Farm grows exclusively without soil, feeding plant roots through recirculating water with a dissolved mineral solution, a method known as nutrient film technique (NFT). Greens are grown in climate-controlled, fully enclosed greenhouses that keep produce elevated off the ground and protected from pests, eliminating the need for chemical pesticides. The farm also uses open greenhouses, shade houses, enclosed shipping containers for microgreens and sprouts, and mixed-media ground troughs (filled with coco fiber and pine bark, no soil) for root vegetables. Tomatoes and cucumbers are grown in bucket or bag systems. Hydroponic growing uses about one-tenth the water of traditional farming. The farm practices Integrated Pest Management (IPM), introducing beneficial insects such as ladybugs and applying organic biological controls when needed to combat Florida's heat, humidity, and pest pressures. Flower rows draw pests away from produce.
