Bloomington farm specializing in heirloom and open-pollinated chile pepper plants, plus sweet peppers, tomatoes, and tomatillos.
The Chile Woman is a Bloomington farm that has been growing and selling chile pepper plants for more than 34 years. The farm offers an extensive selection of heirloom and open-pollinated chile varieties, along with sweet peppers, tomato, and tomatillo plants. Plants are available for local greenhouse pickup during the growing season, with greenhouse hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The farm also ships plants nationwide during its permitted shipping window each spring. The Chile Woman accepts Bloominghours, Bloomington's local currency, and has been featured in Mother Earth News and recognized with Green America's Green Business People and Planet Award.
The Chile Woman grows all plants using what it calls Hoosierganic methods: naturally, without chemicals or pesticides. The farm favors open-pollinated and heirloom varieties over hybrids, with a long-standing commitment to preserving biogenetic diversity through seed saving and seed sharing. It has signed the Safe Seed Pledge and does not offer patented or bioengineered seeds. The farm's operations are powered by a 5.2-kilowatt solar array installed in 2013. The farm also raises chickens and Jacob sheep.
