Pasture-raised beef, pork, chicken, and eggs from a family farm near Bloomington, Indiana.
Schacht Farm raises beef, pork, chicken, and eggs on land in Monroe County that has been in the family since the late 1960s. The farm grew out of a personal effort to produce more of its own food, starting with laying hens and broilers before expanding to cattle and hogs. Products are sold through farmers markets in Bloomington and Indianapolis and through a monthly CSA program. CSA members receive a 15-pound share of pasture-raised meats delivered on a monthly basis, with options covering chicken, beef, and pork in various combinations. An egg share is also available for members on a reserved basis. The farm began on 57 acres just south of Bloomington and has since grown to include several owned and leased properties, all within Monroe County. Learn more on their About Page.
Schacht Farm raises its animals on pasture, meaning soil underfoot and open sky overhead, with access to plants to forage and fresh air. Beef cattle are grass-fed and grass-finished, receiving no grain or grain by-products at any point, and subsisting entirely on forage and hay. Poultry and hogs are raised on pasture and given non-GMO grain (not certified organic). Hogs are heritage breeds, primarily Tamworths, selected for their foraging ability. Laying hens are Golden Comets, chosen for their foraging performance in a pasture-based model. Meat chickens are Cornish Cross, raised on pasture in a way the farm describes as allowing slow growth with minimal grain. Mineral supplements and apple cider vinegar used on the farm are certified organic.
