Pastured eggs, meat chickens, and grass-fed lamb from a 63-acre Jefferson County farm.
Sweetlove Farm is a pasture-based farm on 63 acres in Jefferson County, Kansas, raising pastured poultry and grass-fed, grass-finished lamb. The farm was established in 1999 and produces pasture-raised eggs and meat chickens alongside its lamb operation. Eggs are sold through an online webstore, at the Lawrence Farmers Market on Saturdays from April through November, at The Merc and Hillcreek Market, and at select Kansas City and Lawrence restaurants. Egg production follows seasonal rhythms, with peak availability and quality during the spring, summer, and fall growing season. Learn more on their About Page.
Sweetlove Farm raises its laying hens in movable open-air hoop houses that rotate across the pasture, giving the birds constant access to grass, weeds, seeds, bugs, fresh air, and sunshine. Animals are managed through intensively rotational grazing using lightweight portable electric fencing and netting, which both protects livestock from wild predators and controls the rotation of animals through available forage. The farm models its pastures on native prairie principles, cultivating species-diverse forage ecosystems with a mixture of warm- and cool-season grasses, forbs, and legumes rather than single-species monocultures. Animals are moved from several times a day to once every few days depending on grass growth and season, allowing adequate recovery time for grazed forage. The farm aims to carry out this entire process with minimal petroleum-powered machinery.
