Urban farm growing chemical-free, non-GMO produce and operating a farmers market in Summerland.
Sweet Wheel Farms is an approximately seven-acre urban farm in Summerland, California, founded in response to the food insecurity exposed by the 2018 debris flows that cut the town off for over ten days. It operates as a program of the Santa Barbara Agriculture and Farm Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, on land owned by that foundation. The farm grows chemical-free, non-GMO produce and makes it available to the wider community through a farmers market. Its online shop offers farm-grown vegetables, fruits, and herbs alongside goods from local partners. The farm also supports the Healthy Farmed Food Solutions Project, which delivers fresh food to food-insecure and medically fragile families across Santa Barbara County each week. Sweet Wheel Farms operates as a closed-loop farm, growing produce without pesticides, synthetic preservatives, or genetically modified varieties. The farm applies careful attention to soil health, water use, and ecological balance, and draws on local, national, and global growing techniques to build a sustainable urban agriculture model. Its approach keeps resources circulating within Santa Barbara County, reducing the need for long-distance transportation, refrigeration, and fuel-intensive logistics.
