La Puma Farms is a three-acre urban working farm in Santa Barbara, designed by John La Puma, MD, a board-certified internist, trained chef, and pioneer of culinary medicine. The farm grows a wide range of fruits, vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, and specialty crops, including rare citrus varieties such as bergamot oranges, yuzu lemons, and makrut limes, as well as avocados, tropical fruits, berries, figs, olives, and heritage apples. It has been Certified Organic since 2014 and also holds Real Organic Project certification. The farm supplies produce to local chefs, mixologists, and restaurateurs, and offers guided culinary and medical farm tours, private events, and farm stays. La Puma Farms farms regeneratively and organically, and applies permacultural techniques throughout its three acres. The farm avoids synthetic artificial chemicals and uses no-till agriculture, heavy mulching, biochar, comfrey, and compost to build soil fertility. Over 10 percent of the land is devoted to insectary plants and the beneficial insects they attract, while extensive biodiversity supports natural pest control. The farm keeps bees for pollination as part of its regenerative practices. It captures, stores, and re-uses rainwater, and uses timed drip irrigation as needed. A unique multispecies cover crop mix is used in the orchards. The farm aims to re-use, recycle, and repurpose all materials it can, and uses carbon and nitrogen sequestration in the soil as part of its approach to climate resilience.
