Sunworks Farm is a certified organic family farm near Armena, Alberta, owned and operated by Ron and Sheila Hamilton. The Hamiltons began converting their land to certified organic status after moving to the farm in 1992 and have been raising certified organic animals since 1997. The farm produces beef, chicken, pork, turkey, and eggs, along with a line of organic sausages, bacon, and deli meats. Products are sold directly to consumers through farmers markets across Alberta and online. The farm also operates its own on-site poultry processing plant and meat cutting facility, built in 2014. Sunworks Farm holds certified organic and Certified Humane status, with annual inspections for each. Its organic standard excludes GMOs, chemical pesticides and herbicides, antibiotics, and growth hormones. Beef is 100% grass-finished: cattle are time-controlled grazed on pasture in summer and fed certified organic hay in winter, with no grains or grain by-products. Chickens and turkeys are raised on pasture in shelters moved daily onto fresh grass in summer, then brought inside in winter and fed certified organic grain. Laying hens follow the same seasonal pasture rotation and eat certified organic grains; no chemical wash or sealants are used on eggs. Pigs are raised on pasture year-round, eating grass and certified organic hay, alfalfa, and free-choice grain. All sausages, bacon, and deli meats use certified organic meat, spices, and maple syrup or honey, and contain no nitrates, nitrites, sulfites, MSG, wheat, egg, nut, corn, or dairy.
