Coen Farm is a family operation in Ferintosh, Alberta with roots going back to the early 1900s. In 1988 the farm made a deliberate shift away from chemical fertilizers and biocides, committing to what it describes as beyond-organic, regenerative methods. Takota Coen returned to the farm in 2012 and integrated permaculture design, holistic management, and rotational grazing into daily operations. The farm raises grass-fed and finished Galloway beef, milk-fed Berkshire pork, and free-range eggs, and grows berries and herbal teas from a six-acre permaculture forest garden. Coen Farm has operated without chemical fertilizers, biocides, or vaccines since 1988. Soil health is maintained through no-till methods, cover crops, and rotational grazing, guided by a visual soil health assessment process developed over six years of study. Galloway cattle graze on diverse pastures and are moved frequently to mimic natural herd behavior, producing grass-fed and finished beef. Berkshire pigs are raised on pasture and fed a diet of milk from the farm's grass-fed Jersey cows, fermented grains, and forage. Free-range hens roam pasture seasonally, forage for insects and plants, and are supplemented with organic, soy-free feed. The six-acre forest garden, planted in 2014 and modeled on permaculture principles, features over 50 species of perennial fruits, berries, and nuts. Animal well-being is prioritized through low-stress handling, rotational grazing, and diverse diets across all species.
