Hawaii wild venison and grass-fed beef, sold as fresh cuts, jerky, sausages, and ready-to-cook products.
Makana Provisions is a Hawaii meat business specializing in wild-harvested Molokai venison and grass-fed Hawaii beef, alongside lamb, chicken, and a line of value-added products including jerky, hunter sausages, burger patties, chili, stews, hot sauce, and spice rubs. It was founded by Ignacio Fleishour, a chef and cultural practitioner with Kiowa Apache and Cherokee heritage and an M.A. in Anthropology/Archaeology. The business began lobbying in 2008 for USDA FSIS approval to sell wild-harvested venison commercially, and started marketing venison in 2012. Products are available at Times Supermarkets, Kokua Market, Wailua Fresh, Chef Zone, and the Blaisdell Farmer's Market. Learn more on their About Page.
Makana Provisions sources its venison from wild deer harvested on Molokai, with all venison and meats harvested and processed in Hawaii under USDA oversight. Its grass-fed cattle are raised open range across pastures on Oahu, Maui, Molokai, and the Big Island, spending their entire lives in Hawaii with no added hormones or antibiotics and no feedlot confinement. The business works with local ranchers across the islands and on its own Molokai project, where it finishes cattle using traditional Hawaiian medicinal plants and endemic grasses. It also sources fresh lamb and chicken from ranchers around the islands. Its stated goal is to demonstrate regenerative grazing practices that build soil, store carbon, and protect marine habitats from agricultural runoff.
