CSA vegetable farm growing 50 crops and nearly 250 varieties on fertile Alabama bottomland
Snow's Bend Farm is owned and operated by Margaret Ann Toohey and David Snow, who began farming the property in 2004. The farm sits on bottomland along the Black Warrior River outside Tuscaloosa, on soil designated "Tuscaloosa Choccolocco," a fine-silt ground rich in organic matter deposited over millennia. It now spans more than 10 acres, producing 50 different vegetables in nearly 250 varieties, cut flowers, and livestock. The farm's primary offering is a season-long CSA with weekly shares of 6 to 8 items, with pick-up options in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. Shares cover spring crops such as strawberries, salad mix, and fava beans; summer crops including heirloom tomatoes, melons, and okra; and fall crops such as sweet potatoes, winter squash, and broccoli. Snow's Bend Farm starts its crops from seed in an on-site greenhouse. The farm's bottomland soil is naturally high in organic matter, built up over millennia by flood deposits from the Black Warrior River. The farm has plans to establish a perennial fruit orchard and an heirloom seed-saving garden to preserve genetic diversity and select for local adaptability. Planned biodiversity enhancements include mixed-species hedgerows and habitat structures designed to support native bees and beneficial insects year-round.
